Method, limits, and the one measurement that matters
A marketed TV size is the diagonal of the visible screen—not the cabinet, bezel, feet, box, or wall-mount pattern.
How width and height are calculated
For an aspect ratio a:b, the ratio diagonal is √(a² + b²). Screen width is
diagonal × a ÷ √(a² + b²); height uses b instead.
A 65″ 16:9 screen is about 56.7″ wide and 31.9″ tall. The result describes the lit screen area exactly, subject only to the advertised diagonal being accurate.
Why a fit result may still be an estimate
Bezels, lower sensor housings, stands, feet, cable clearance, and tolerances differ by model. Use the “actual outer dimensions” switch when the manufacturer lists width and height.
Before purchase or installation, verify the model’s full dimensions, stand footprint, depth, VESA pattern, wall construction, and mount limits.
How viewing distance is calculated
The geometric formula is distance = (screen width ÷ 2) ÷ tan(angle ÷ 2). This tool shows 30°, 36°, and 40° so you can choose comfort versus immersion instead of receiving one unexplained number.
The resolution marker uses a one-arcminute approximation for 20/20 visual acuity. Eyesight, content quality, compression, seating, and preference vary, so treat it as a threshold estimate—not a health rule.

What size TV fits a 60-inch-wide space?
A 65″ 16:9 screen is about 56.7″ wide before the bezel. It can fit a 60″ opening only when the model’s actual chassis and your required side clearance fit inside the remaining space. Use the Fit mode above rather than relying on screen width alone.
