Balanced common size
83″ TV
At 9 ft, an 83″ TV is closest to a 36° balanced view.

Shaded zone = 30°–40°. The highlighted point is your selected result.
Top-down view of an 83-inch television 9 feet from the viewer, filling about 37 degrees of horizontal vision.

Transparent method
A useful range, not one magic number
Comfort, immersion, eyesight, content quality, and room constraints vary. The calculator separates viewing angle from resolution detail instead of blending them into one unexplained recommendation.
How distance becomes TV size
The tool calculates screen width from distance and horizontal field of view, then converts that width to a 16:9 diagonal. It shows the exact diagonal and the nearest listed common TV size.
width = 2 × distance × tan(angle ÷ 2)
Why 30°, 36°, and 40° are separate
30° is a more relaxed mixed-viewing anchor, 40° is more immersive, and 36° is this tool’s explicit midpoint—not a hidden universal rule. Select the profile that matches how you use the room.

What the 4K threshold means
The resolution marker uses a one-arcminute approximation for 20/20 visual acuity. It estimates when individual pixel detail becomes difficult to resolve; it is not a comfort, health, or purchase rule.
